How to see Photography

Being visually literate. Why take a photo? What does it say? What are the psychological and emotional motivations when you take a photo? What were the artist’s emotions in the image you are viewing? What did the viewer see? Study composition and tool. Subjective observation. When taking a photo, focus on the process not product. How is a photo presented? question, the purpose- intention and function. Innovation in technology and it’s affect on photography. Techniques and experimentation. What is the vision? Choosing before clicking. How important is editing? Metaphor or subject? Context and Narrative. The Art of choosing. Are you creating a set up? Theatre? Natural setting. How do pictures change when put together and when seen individually? Is it relevant to time or timeless? How does the combination of image and text work? What are the formats that work? (book, prints and exhibition) How to find personal style in imagery. Looking at the same work with different perceptions. What is your story? Method? Use of Mixed media. How does one see cultural influence in Photography and the Subconscious information it carries.

Contemporary Art

Response to something, often a problem: political, environmental. Can be in the form of images that can be easily sourced and shared or even videos that can be easy to watch and play with. How to read and listen to photography?Photographer gives you hints but the viewer finds the narrative. Various themes like space, time, memory, identity, environment, place, borders. What the piece meant to the artist and what it means to you. – find context. What is the form, texture, colour , materials used? What is the Inspiration- how will it be produced and communicated. Various forms in Performance based art (theatre – sound- space). New art in the form of Info-graphs and diagrams ( tools of communication) and Mixed media subjects eg architecture marries GIFS.

Art Ideas and Activities 

Activities designed to focus on the process rather than product. Facilitate rather than teach. Observe- analyse and reflect. Creating- imagining and connecting. Learning through doing. Experiential learning. Physical, social, cultural and conceptual. Clear outcome. Engaging senses. Ask questions. Divide themes. Create narratives. Time to think and personal observation. Facilitate original ideas. Group activities. Context of the content. Look- wonder- curious – interpretation- connections – multiple perspective- form own conclusions. Drawing or language based? Discussions. Mixing Sound and movement. Document and describe. Work with partner. Turn and talk.Making a visual inventory. Prompts. Templates. Characterisation and Poems and storytelling. Question design and it’s thought/ functionality. Design journal – Critical thinking and problem solving. Brief- research – change – model. Fashion as Design

Representation of society, thought, myths, aspirations. What do you want to project? Values? Individual in a society. Clothes make us feel bigger- empowerment and It makes you feel – personal. Materials and how they work on bodies. Subcultures. Iconic themes ( track suits- jumpsuits- leather jacket – hoodie- sari ). Thought that goes into the functionality of clothing. Meaning of a garment in different contexts ( cultural social and political). Shape – conform eg bra, augmented – free eg kaftan or lungi. Association of colour – black to death and white to wedding. Heels changing posture. Process- Crafting (Value of Saville Row) – producing – growing ( couture or mass or local ). Innovation in Technology eg 3D printing. Recycle – white Tshirt and jeans. What are timeless pieces? Upcycle and lifecycle. Making a garment your own – jeans ( stone washed). Circular economy and Sustainable e commerce.

Abstract Art 

American abstract artists different from European realism. Historical context v/s material & process (Oil v/s acrylic v/s enamel). Style of strokes and Colour combinations. Use of Form- space – composition – colour – texture-rhythm and layer.

Study: Jackson pollock- Barnet newman – Mark rothko – De kooning – Agnes martin 

Philosophy

Making sense of the world. Finding logic. Vision followed by argument. Finding meaning. Co dependent on other studies like physics and medicine. Observing and theory. Individual and collective. Conclusion based on premises. Working out the best way to think: larger picture. Continuous questioning and different perspectives. Free will – no right way. Action led by thought.
